Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy ( PCNL )
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is minimally invasive surgery in which large kidney stones are removed through a small incision made at the back (loin area).
Why PCNL surgery?
- 1. Less post operative pain and discomfort.
- 2. Minimally invasive.
- 3. Causes minimal damage to kidney.
- 4. Best for large kidney stones over open surgery.
Preparation for PCNL surgery:
- 1. Urologist will ask you to do sonography, digital IVP/CT-IVP, blood test before finalising on PCNL surgery.
- 2. Stop blood thinner (if you are on blood thinners it will cause bleeding)
- 3. 12 hours fasting needed (not allowed to eat or drink)
- 4. Iv antibiotics are given
- 5. Surgeon will explain procedure of surgery, so that patient is well informed.
- 6. Anaesthetist will decide for the type of anaesthesia and discuss anaesthesia related problems with the patient.
- 7. Patients rarely have small residual stones, after PCNL operation, in calyces of the kidney..
PCNL surgery is commonly performed operation at Hitech Urology Centre and Dr. Vivek Birla has special expertise in it.
