The Surgery is performed at the wrist or elbow level to establish direct connection between artery and vein. Once the fistula is created, blood flow in the veins become faster and veins get dilated. It can take weeks to months before the fistula matures and is ready to be used for hemodialysis. People with kidney disease can do exercises including squeezing a rubber ball to strengthen the fistula before use.
